Success is the only word that I can think of, after completing my first Half Marathon. My goal was to do it under 2:30 mins (150 mins) and I ended up with a timing of 2:22:43 which is more than what I had hoped for.
In my practise run, mid December I did a 21K and that was 2:31 so I was a little sceptical about whether I could do it or not, but I was hopeful, as things get pushed a little on a race day eventually. The first hour went like a dream and I never stopped. In that 1 Hour I covered 9K and until I crossed 13K it was all going like a charm. After that reality started to hit back and I was a bit down on energy so had some refreshments from the aid stations + a couple of gels to give that boost of energy and that was good only until 18K. From there my pace started going down (not very bad) and I wanted to stop at any point and this is where the mind game begins and your training and endurance comes into play. Kept going and with people on the way cheering in the last 1 KM, made it across the finish line, but couldn’t do a sprint to the finish line. I have a small niggle in my left ankle which starts hurting during long runs, that's the next area of concentration and get it improved before the next event.
As it mostly happens, I crossed the finish line but my Garmin was still saying I haven’t finished it, so another 400+ meters to run within the confined space to satisfy the device 🙂
One thing which went awry is my garmin run program, couldn’t stick to it as I had to keep running to get ahead of the crowd else it hinders my rhythm, so that went out of the window from the very beginning. Think it’s better to assume that plans are ok for smaller events but for such big events with 1000’s of runners around, it is not easy to stick to them.
Also at the finish line had the opportunity to meet Barefoot Bobby, who I follow regularly for his running experiences.

Marathon #4 (10K) for 2024.

Did complete the 4th 10K marathon for this year and it has almost been like, we are doing a marathon every month (except for April & May). This time the organisation was better, though the flag off was slighly delayed, it was not as bad as the previous one and also the road was also blocked so we could run more comfortably without having to worry about too many vehicles on the road (there was still some traffic on the road).

My PB and first clear sub 60 finish this time and I’m happy about it. The main difference was the continuous run this time, I ran the whole 10K without stopping much, I walked twice in the whole stretch but each of those walks was not more than 10/15 seconds. Finished overall 43rd & 36th among men and quite satisfied about that.

Next run is probably on the 28th of July, not sure if I can better it anymore within this short span, but the next target will be to do it within 50 mins if possible. So more training and more preparation on the cards. Thanks to my trainer @thamizhandaa who keeps pushing me and helps to prepare for my runs. He is so supportive that before I message him the results he pings me asking “How did the run go and what is the timing?”.

Thanks to my running gang for sticking on and we have a lot of fun running together as a group and lots of nice memories that we end up making in these little adventures.

Due to travel in the last couple of weeks I couldn’t do my training and practise runs. So by 24th Jan when I got back to Chennai, I was nervous due to lack of preparation. So did a long run on Friday (26th Jan) to make sure I can still do it, may be that was a overkill, but it is a lesson learnt.

Come race day, I got the usual jitters and a bit of anxiety, as I now have something to compare against (Chennai Marathon 10K timing). The struggle was still the first few kilometers, you start feeling “Why the hell did I start doing this, why am I running 10kms, I should stop and walk back” but it is against these odds that you have to push and keep knocking off those KM’s. Saw a very old lady & uncle (they were surely 60 or 65+) running enthusiastically and that kept me going.

Did not have any pacers to begin with, but a couple of runners were going ahead of me at a very steady pace and I considered them as my pacers and followed them until the 8th KM. After that a short walking break and then dash to the finish line.

I did record the last dash in the GoPro but it came out a bit shaky as I couldn’t use my Gimbal (too bulky to carry all through the run) and only held id in my mini tripod. Next time will try a different setup to record.
